Sara joined our school family in 2005 as a grade 5 teacher.  Since that time, Mrs. Suranna has taught grades 1, 3 and 5.  Students, staff, and families who come into contact with Sara immediately know they are associated with someone who lives and teaches through kindness, integrity, and self-reflection.  Mrs. Suranna always considers others: her students, her families, and her colleagues.  She constantly reflects on how she can be better for them both personally and professionally.  This embedded ownership affords her students wonderful educational experiences across academic and social-emotional arenas, her families an ever-present collaborative partner in their children’s education, and her colleagues someone they can count on to always give her very best to contribute, support, and be a positive, collegial presence.  Without question, each member of Sara’s class departs for middle school not only a better student, but a better person.  Sara’s natural inclination and talent for seamlessly infusing critical, social-emotional competencies relevant to a child’s daily experiences is a gift students reap the benefit from for the remainder of their lives.  Through daily accountability and support, every child receives the message, “You are important, you are cared for, you are capable, you are connected to this classroom community”.

Sara received her bachelor’s degree from Springfield College and her master’s degree from the University of Hartford.  As an active, involved professional Sara serves on the district social studies vertical team and district staff advisory council.  She is a TEAM reviewer and has written core curriculum, taught after-school enrichment, and participated in school and district interview committees.  Mrs. Suranna has attended such conferences and workshops as Literacy for All, Responsive Classroom, Reading and Writing through Teachers College, Math Studio, and Kate and Maggie reading/writing workshop.  She has participated in a range of professional book clubs and has opened her classroom to school/district colleagues and parent volunteers.  Sara has offered her time regarding a number of school committees, events, and fundraisers including the social committee, field day committee, Annual PTO Pasta Supper, Hubbard School Carnival, and Celebration of Arts.

Congratulations Sara for this special honor!  The Hubbard family of educators applauds and celebrates your daily commitment to your students, colleagues, and school community.  We are proud to have such a wonderful person and professional as our 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year!
